Participation in European projects

Poland’s membership in the European Union has created wide opportunities for cooperation in the area of applied research and development work. The Institute of Aviation has successfully joined the European research area thanks to its partnership participation in the EU programmes. Another impulse was provided by the Operational Projects carried out by the Institute of Aviation.

Scientific cooperation with the Ohio State University

In accordance with a mutual desire to promote further cooperation in higher education between the United States of America and Poland, The Faculty of Power and Aeronautical Engineering at The Warsaw University of Technology and The Institute of Aviation, Warsaw, Poland and The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, USA signed a formal agreement for the purpose of educational and cultural exchange.

Establishment of the Center of Space Technologies

The Center of Space Technologies was founded in 2013 and is one of the most important investment carried out at the Institute of Aviation. Opening of the Component Test Laboratory

The ceremony of opening the laboratory took place on 8th January 2014 with the participation of  Deputy Prime Minister Janusz Piechocinski, Marshal of Masovia voivodship Adam Struzik, Director of the National Research and Development Centre Krzysztof Kurzydłowski and representatives of universities, ministries and technology establishments. The laboratory was established in cooperation with General Electric.

Cooperation with the University of Brasilia

The Institute of Aviation in Warsaw and the University of Brasilia (Universidade de Brasilia), one of the largest and most important federal universities in Brazil, decided to begin cooperation in November 2014, during a visit in Brazil by a delegation from the Institute of Aviation. Both sides decided to create the Polish-Brazilian Center of Excellence in Aviation and Space High Technology and to organize the Polish-Brazilian Conference on Science and Technology.

Defence of the first doctoral dissertation in the Institute of Aviation

The first public defence of the doctoral dissertation of Włodzimierz Gnarowski, M.Sc.Eng.  titled “Method for improving the maneuverability of a top-wing monoplane” took place on 17 November 2014. The doctoral student used the results of research conducted during his work in the position of Lead Designer of I-22 “Iryda” trainer aircraft. This is the first doctoral thesis defended at the Institute of Aviation.

Center for Composite Technologies was founded

On 1st January 2015 the Institute of Aviation opened a new division – Center for Composite Technologies. The new center was established to deliver composite technology solutions and composite material tests for aviation industry.

First Prize for STARLET project

On 17 March 2015 as part of the Clean Sky Forum, the Award ceremony for the three 2015 Best Clean Sky Projects took place. Among the 20 shortlisted candidates from all the different ITDs and TE the first prize went to the STARLET Project – a low TRL project that develops and investigates through CFD Simulations and Wind Tunnel Tests new concepts of fluidic devices dedicated to active control of aerodynamic loads on aircraft wing. The project was realized by a consortium, led by the IOA.

The 15th anniversary of the Engineering Design Center – Jubilee Gala

On May 7th, 2015 a jubilee Gala on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the Engineering Design Center was held. In the meeting with the EDC employees took part a special guest – Jeff Immelt, Chairman of the Board and GE Chief Executive Officer. The Gala was hosted by prof. Witold Wiśniowski – Director of the Institute of Aviation and Magdalena Nizik – Director of General Electric Company Polska.

Official joining to the Diversity Charter community

On 22nd of May 2015 the Institute of Aviation and General Electric Company Polska became signatories of the Diversity Charter in Poland. The Institute of Aviation and General Electric Company Polska are among 100 companies and institutions which adopted the Diversity Charter. Both institutions signed it officially on October 8th, 2014 at the Institute of Aviation in Warsaw.

The opening of Gas Turbine Center

The Institute of Aviation has opened a high-tech Gas Turbine Center, unique in Europe and in the world. Thanks to its unique laboratory facilities and world’s largest vacuum chamber it will be possible to conduct tests of heavy-duty gas turbines as well as aircraft engines for the aviation industry. The official opening was held on 20 January 2016.

Opening of the Center of Transportation and Energy Conversion

On the beginning of April 2016 the Institute of Aviation opened the Center of Transportation and Energy Conversion. The Center covers wide area of R&D,  testing and technology development for ground, sea, rail and air transportation systems as well as for energy conversion from renewable to conventional resources. The intermediate aim of this center is the elaboration of solutions with chance for operative implementation with support from Polish and foreign industry.

Polish-American PhD studies program at the Institute of Aviation

The Institute of Aviation and the Ohio State University have signed an agreement on dual PhD degree program. The offer will benefit researchers of both institutions, who wish to gain research and professional experience outside their home unit.

90th anniversary of the Institute of Aviation

On 20th May 2016 at Fabryka Trzciny in Warsaw an exhibition and presentation of the Institute of Aviation achievements on the occasion of the 90th anniversary connected with the Gala and Jubilee Ball was held. The current and former employees, as well as the invited guests from Poland and abroad, participated in the event.

Polish Wind Tunnels Cluster

On the 21st of July 2016, the Warsaw University of Technology, the Military University of Technology in Warsaw and the Institute of Aviation have signed a framework agreement within an established Cluster under the name of the Polish Wind Tunnels.

Cooperative Agreement between the University of Stuttgart

During the 6th EASN International Conference „Innovation in European Aeronautics Research” in Porto, a cooperative agreement was signed between the Institute of Aircraft Design, University of Stuttgart and the Institute of Aviation. On the basis of the above-mentioned Agreement, the University of Stuttgart and the Institute of Aviation will, in the future, realize joint tasks and R&D projects in the field of aeronautical engineering.

Brussels Innova 2016: Gold medal for the Institute of Aviation innovation

The 65th International Exhibition of Innovation, Research and New Technologies BRUSSELS INNOVA 2016 took place from 17 November until 19 November 2016.  The Institute of Aviation showcased the innovation “Individual Autonomous Navigation System (IANS)” developed by Stanisław Popowski’s team from the Avionics Department. As a result of the evaluation the jury has awarded the Institute of Aviation a gold medal.

Opening of the Heat Transfer and Fluid Mechanics Laboratory

December 14, 2016, marked the grand opening of Heat Transfer and Fluid Mechanics Laboratory at the Institute of Aviation. The laboratory will run tests for the technical teams at Engineering Design Center (EDC), the biggest engineering center in Europe, ran together by GE and the Institute of Aviation in Warsaw. It will also cooperate with other engineering and R&D centers in Poland and abroad.

Opening of the Vibroacoustics Laboratory

On January the 1st , 2017 an Vibroacoustic Laboratory has been established in Institute of Aviation’s Materials and Structures Research Center. The new team has begun the accreditation process in the Polish Center of Accreditation of their proprietary research method called “Dynamics investigation of the complete mechanical constructions or its components”.

Polish government and GE signed an agreement at the Institute of Aviation

On January 26, 2017 the Institute of Aviation witnessed a ceremonial signing of an agreement on strategic cooperation between the Ministry of Development and General Electric. The signatories were represented by Mateusz Morawiecki, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Development and Finance, and John G. Rice, Vice President of GE. Cooperation agreement with SCAAI

On January 17, 2017 the director of the Institute of Aviation, professor Witold Wiśniowski together with the president of the State Commission on Aircraft Accidents Investigation col. pilot Andrzej Lewandowski signed a cooperation agreement in the field of research, expertise and technical analyses.

Institute of Aviation with NATO, ESA and EU Industry Safety Certificates

After conducting industrial safety proceedings, the Internal Security Agency found the Institute of Aviation to have full ability to protect classified information NATO, ESA and EU level (3rd level), as well as at national levels (1st and 2nd level). The Institute of Aviation may now apply for research contracts with access to classified information.

Test flights of the national team of ski jumpers at the Institute of Aviation

On 30 August 2017, an official meeting was held in the Aerodynamics Research Laboratory with the participation of representatives of the Ministry of Sport and Tourism, the Institute of Aviation, the Institute of Sport and the Polish Ski Association together with members of the national ski jumping team. The visit included test flights scheduled for this day.

More than 37 thousands fans gather for the 8th Night at the Institute of Aviation

This 8th Night at the Institute of Aviation ended with another attendance record. Over the course of six hours, more than 37 thousand people went through the gateway of the Institute of Aviation. Despite a slight chill in the air, there was plenty of people willing to explore and to marvel at the beautifully lit machines and laboratories of the Institute.

Establish a Joint Centre of Excellence with NIAS

On October 16, 2017 the Warsaw School of Economics hosted a ceremony of signing a bilateral agreement on scientific cooperation will establish the Centre of Excellence for joint R&D projects dedicated to UAS technologies, in particular drone detection and neutralization,  research and certification, smart cities integration, drone delivery systems,  development of BVLOS and airspace control related technologies.

ILR-33 “Amber” sounding rocket completes successful flight test

On October 22nd, 2017, at Land Forces Training Centre „Drawsko” in northwest Poland the first flight test of the ILR-33 “Amber” sounding rocket was performed. Its aim was to verify in-flight technical solutions for sounding and launch vehicles designed and developed by the Institute of Aviation. The flight was successful.
